The coastline of the Persian Gulf is one of the most popular travel destinations within the country. The southern region, from the islands of Kish and Qeshm to the cities of Bandar Abbas, Bushehr, and Khark Island, each has its own unique attractions, which is why they attract a large number of tourists every year. When traveling to southern Iran, one of the most special experiences anyone can have is staying near the shores of the Persian Gulf. In this article from Gulf City Pedia travel magazine, we aim to introduce some of the best beachfront hotels in southern Iran on Khark Island.

Khark Island

Khark Island (or Kharg, in the local dialect) is a beautiful and economically significant coral island in the Persian Gulf. It stands out from other tourist islands in the region due to the presence of major oil companies, such as Iranian Offshore Oil Company, Khark Petrochemical Company, and Oil Terminals Company. This island is part of Bushehr Province and is located northwest of the city, about 38 kilometers from the coast of Bandar Ganaveh. Khark also has a small neighboring island called Khargu. The island typically experiences short winters, and its weather is generally hot and humid, with autumn rains arriving in the fall.

While parts of Khark Island, especially the industrial areas, suffer from severe air pollution, other areas distant from factories and industrial zones remain relatively free of this issue. The island covers an area of approximately 20 square kilometers and has a population of over 9,000 people. However, not all of the residents are locals; a large portion of the population consists of migrants, such as employees of the major oil companies based on the island.

Renowned archaeologist Roman Ghirshman suggested that the name “Khark” might be related to the historical name “Khaks” and linked the term “Kharkas” with the ancient name of the Karun River, “Khosaspes.” Meanwhile, Saeed Nafisi believed that Khark Island was part of the ancient land of Kharakene, which explains its current name.

Geologically, the surface of the island is covered by a thin, extremely hard layer made up of fossils, coral remnants, bivalves, and other marine organisms, mixed with sand particles. Due to a lack of fertile soil, the island doesn’t support much vegetation, though there are some native trees, including the banyan tree, also known as the Indian fig. These trees have large, sprawling roots above the ground and provide ample shade. The island’s wildlife is limited, with species such as deer, large venomous snakes, and some migratory birds calling it home.

Khark Island, located 38 kilometers off the coast of Bandar Ganaveh, is a pristine island offering a serene and peaceful atmosphere. The island’s clear, blue waters attract tourists eager to visit this hidden gem. Since the island is still largely untouched, there aren’t many hotels, but currently, Najafi Hotel and Arad Hotel are the best accommodations on Khark Island.

Khark Island does not have any hotels, but you can visit the nearest hotels to the island. We have listed two of them for you:
