Mashhad Airport: A Comprehensive Overview
Mashhad International Airport, also known as Shahid Hashemi Nejad Airport, is one of the busiest airports in Iran, serving as a gateway to the holy city of Mashhad. It is the second busiest airport in Iran after Mehrabad Airport in Tehran and ranks first in terms of daily inbound and outbound flights.
History
Established in 1951, Mashhad Airport initially handled only one daily flight to Tehran and occasional training flights. In 1967, a new runway was added to accommodate military and training operations, while daily flights to Tehran continued. With the increase in air traffic and the introduction of newer aircraft, multiple parking areas, terminals, an air traffic control tower, and ancillary buildings were inaugurated from 1978 onwards. The project’s completion was delayed due to the Iran-Iraq War, but the airport resumed operations under the name Shahid Hashemi Nejad Airport after the war.
Operations
Mashhad Airport serves as a hub for several airlines, including Iran Air, Iran Airtour, Meraj, Taban, Mahan, and Aseman. International carriers operating at the airport include Turkish Airlines, Germania, Jazeera Airways, Kam Air, Qatar Airways, SunExpress, Iraqi Airways, Al Arabiya, Kuwait Airways, and Flydubai. The airport is open 24/7 and caters to passengers from around the globe.
