Start from the north, visit all the cities along your route one by one, and imprint the incredible Iranian landscapes in your mind and soul. Then, head west, south, and east of Iran before finally returning to the beautiful north. However, if you plan to tour Iran, it can be challenging to know where to go and which cities to visit.

That’s why a comprehensive roadmap can help you identify priority cities. Proper planning can also assist you in selecting the right gear and clothing for each city in the country. Join Gulf City Pedia in this article to get a roadmap and all the necessary information for your amazing journey.

“Embarking on a Journey through Northern Cities of Iran: Rain, Forests, Seas, and Delicious Foods

The northern region of Iran is the perfect starting point for your memorable journey. In these northern cities, you can expect to indulge in the most delicious cuisines of your life. Experience the best weather in Iran and drive on the country’s most beautiful roads. You can begin your Iran tour from Gilan. Explore Gilan from west to east and continue your journey towards the east of Iran. Your extraordinary adventure starts right here.

Gilan, the Land of Beauty

Gilan stretches beautifully from Astara to the Iran-Azerbaijan border on one side and borders Qazvin province on the other. This province is renowned for its delectable foods, excellent restaurants, the sea, and of course, its lush forests. Every corner of this province is worth seeing, but the most remarkable aspect of Gilan is its roads that seem to pass through dreams and lead to colorful small towns and picturesque landscapes.

Astara

Without exaggeration, Astara can be considered one of the most beautiful border cities in Iran. However, at the end of your journey to Astara, you’ll come back and witness one of Iran’s most stunning roads, so take your time to see the breathtaking Astara Gulf. Let’s start with Astara and explore the sights of this beautiful city.”

In Astara, you can stroll along the seaside, sit on the rocky shores, or explore the Astara Seaside Bazaar. After leaving the city, drive along the coastal road and reach the beautiful Estil Lake. Take a break by the lake, and marvel at the floating trees on the water. Then continue on the same route until you reach Talesh.

For a more in-depth understanding of various tourist attractions in this city, you can read about the sights in Astara.

Talesh: Where the Forest Meets the Sea

Talesh boasts the most beautiful fusion of forests and the sea. Wherever you look around the city, on one side, you have the forest, and on the other, you feel the cool breeze from the sea. It’s this meeting point that gives Talesh one of the country’s most beautiful and cool climates.

One of the most stunning places you can see in Talesh during your Iran tour is the Siah Dareh Forest Park. You don’t need to drive far from the city to reach this forest park. When you reach the top, the entire city will unfold beneath your feet. The highlight of Siah Dareh Forest Park is the thrilling zip line that takes you through the intertwined trees of the forest at high speed.

Of course, Talesh has other attractions worth exploring, and getting familiar with the sights of Talesh before your trip can be a great help. Remember to make a stop at the beautiful Gisoom Beach on your way from Talesh to Rasht. To reach this beach, you’ll need to drive about 20 minutes on a forest road. The road itself is so beautiful that it takes your breath away, but the real beauty begins when the forest ends, and suddenly you see the boundless sea in front of you. This sight is something you probably won’t forget anytime soon.

Rasht: Culinary Creativity and Cultural Square

Now, you’ve reached the central city of Gilan province, and it’s time to indulge in the promised delicious foods. Rasht is registered as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy. So, the first place you go in Rasht must be one of the city’s excellent restaurants. After satisfying your palate, head to Rasht City Hall Square and walk along the Cultural Pedestrian Path. If luck is on your side and you’re in Rasht over the weekend, you’ll see various handicraft booths in this square. If not, that’s okay too, as the square is so captivating that you can spend hours there, watching the lively and cheerful people of Rasht shopping and playing.

If you want to skip other tourist attractions in Rasht and continue your Iran tour towards Tehran, it’s worth making a detour to Lahijan. It would be a shame to miss the Rural Heritage Museum. This museum is located at kilometer 18 of the Tehran-Rasht road, at the beginning of the Saravan road. It’s only a few minutes off your path to Lahijan, but it’s truly worth it. The Rural Heritage Museum is nestled in the heart of the Saravan forests and showcases several authentic rural houses from various parts of Gilan. These houses were generously donated by the kind people of Gilan to the museum. In the museum, you can also enjoy local delicacies, tea, and various delicious pastries. Rest assured, you won’t leave hungry.

Lahijan: City of Tea, Cookies, Mountains, and Sea

Now that you’ve arrived in Lahijan, the city of tea, cookies, mountains, and sea, the first thing you’ll notice is the distant view of Sheitan Koh Mountain. You’ll see that all the mountain foothills are covered with tea gardens, and the scent of tea will enchant you. Don’t worry; you’ll get to see this mountain much closer.

For a panoramic view of Lahijan, it’s best to head to the rooftop of Lahijan. Park your car up there and take a walk. The surrounding views and the refreshing mountain air will undoubtedly double your energy. If you wish to go higher, the Lahijan cable car awaits you. This cable car takes you to the heart of the most beautiful tea gardens in the highest points of Gilan. Besides the beauty of the destination, the journey itself is so beautiful that you won’t want it to end. When you descend, you have two options: continue your journey to Lahijan or turn back to bid farewell to Gilan.

Exploring Mazandaran Province

The road between Lahijan and Ramsar is one of the most tranquil roads in Iran. Most parts of this road pass very close to the sea, so when you look to your left, you see the calm and beautiful blue sea. On the right side of the road are mountains covered with trees and small and large towns.

picture 9 1

Ramsar: By the Seaside

The first city in Mazandaran that you enter is Ramsar. Ramsar is a beautiful and friendly city located right by the sea. Therefore, choose one of the city’s beachfront parks and take a rest. You can visit one of Ramsar’s restaurants and cafes and enjoy a meal. Then, you can head towards Iran’s most beautiful mountainous region.

Sights in Ramsar:
To reach the beautiful village of Javaher Deh, you need to travel 28 kilometers from Ramsar. However, the entire journey is worth it. Along the way, you pass through a heavenly road and ascend higher and higher until you finally see the clouds beneath your feet. Due to the high altitude above sea level, the temperature in Javaher Deh usually differs significantly from the city, so prepare for the cold and bring warm clothing. Ramsar has numerous rivers, waterfalls, and lakes, each with its unique beauty. To familiarize yourself with all these attractions, take a look at the list of Ramsar’s attractions.

Chalous: A Scenic Drive by the Sea

After Ramsar, hit the beautiful northern road again and enjoy the incredible views of cities and forests between them. The distance between cities in this part of the country is so short that you can hardly tell where one city ends and the next begins. What is certain is that your eyes will be dazzled by the beauty of the clear sea, giving you the opportunity to enjoy a bit of seaside driving.

Nature in Northern Iran

Before reaching Chalous, don’t miss the chance for another cable car ride. After passing through Tonekabon, just before Chalous, you’ll reach the Namak Abrud recreational complex, where one of its attractions is a cable car. Once you take the cable car up the mountain, you can also try the zip line in the complex. Moreover, you can capture incredible photos of the mountainous view. Although the sights in Chalous don’t end here, time is short, and you’ll have to hit the road again.

Sari: Historical and Natural Wonders

One of the biggest challenges of Iran tour is that, with each city and province you step into, you’ll want to stay there and not move forward. It truly requires iron will to leave Chalous, pass through Mahmoudabad, Amol, Babol, and Qaemshahr, and reach Sari. The historical and natural wonders of Sari are abundant, and all the surrounding cities also have captivating attractions waiting for you.

Sights in Sari:
One of the must-see places in Sari is the Badab-e Surt Springs, located 121 kilometers south of Sari. It’s true that you’ll need to drive about two hours to reach these springs, but both the surrounding landscapes and what awaits you at the destination are well worth it. If you visit Badab-e Surt Springs in the summer, be sure to bring water gear. The water in these springs is extremely salty, and the minerals present in it create vibrant yellow, red, and orange colors in the lake.

Golestan Province: Exploring Paradise in a Different Sense

Well, what you’ve seen from Mazandaran province is enough, and now it’s time to experience paradise in a different sense. The cities, forests, and coasts of Golestan province are so beautiful and pristine that it’s hard to believe you’ve set foot on Earth.

picture 11 1

Gorgan: Gateway to Natural Wonders

From Sari to Gorgan, it’s a 133-kilometer journey. But don’t worry; the road is neither long nor difficult. Along the way, you’ll pass through cities like Neka, Kordkuy, and Nodijeh. Additionally, the coast, the sea, and the Gulf of Gorgan are all on your route. Now, where to visit in Gorgan? Of course, Gorgan has numerous natural attractions like other northern cities, but you must not miss the Lunch-eaters’ Forest.

Sights in Gorgan:
In the heart of the forest, the Ziarat River and waterfall await you. After seeing them, you can also visit the beautiful village of Ziarat. Near the Lunch-eaters, the Elangdareh Spring and Lake are also worth seeing, and their beautiful scenery can make your day more memorable. By the lake, you can set up a tea and refreshment stall, stay for a few hours, and relax.

Bandar Turkmen: The Dock by the Caspian Sea

From Gorgan to Bandar Turkmen, you only have a 40-kilometer drive north. So, after seeing Gorgan, you must explore the attractions of Bandar Turkmen. The first place you’ll see in Bandar Turkmen is the Turkmen Pier.

Bandar Turkmen:
After this pier, you can board a boat and take yourself to the only island in the Caspian Sea, Ashurada. This island used to be inhabited until a few years ago, but now it has become the home of thousands of migratory birds. If you’re interested in wild nature, this island will be your paradise.

Iran Tour in Eastern Cities:

Gradually, we’re reaching the eastern cities of Iran, and it’s time to say goodbye to the green and beautiful north. Of course, the eastern cities also have their unique beauties. High mountains and beautiful cities are waiting for you, with the warmest people in all of Iran.

North Khorasan Province: Entering the East

After Golestan, the first province you encounter on your Iran tour is North Khorasan. North Khorasan is known for its tourist attractions and sights. After all the greenery and beauty of northern Iran, we’ve reached a landscape that is more mountainous and arid. Meaning, colder winters and hotter summers. Therefore, you probably need to change your clothes and wear attire suitable for the new climate.

Bojnourd: The Center of North Khorasan

The center of North Khorasan is the city of Bojnourd. This city has two famous tourist spots called Baba Aman and Besh Qardash. Besh Qardash translates to “five brothers” and has an interesting historical story. Allegedly, these five brothers stood against the oppression of the king of that time and sought refuge in the mountains. The current location of these mountains is the Bajnour County. Initially, it was a barren and desolate land. However, after the arrival of these brothers, five boiling springs emerged from the mountain, making the land green and fertile. You can drink water from these five springs. Traditional medicine practitioners even believe that this water is suitable for treating digestive diseases.

Khorasan Razavi: The Journey Continues in the East

Now that you’ve passed through North Khorasan, you’re arriving in Khorasan Razavi. It’s advisable to take the route through Gonbad Kavous, Shirvan, and Quchan to reach Khorasan Razavi. This route is slightly shorter than the Shahrood, Sabzevar, and Neyshabur route, and it’s greener.

picture 15

Mashhad: Beyond the Holy Shrine

While most Iranians visit Mashhad for pilgrimage to the eighth Imam, it’s essential to know that Mashhad has more attractions than religious sites. If you happen to arrive in Mashhad during one of the warm months, make sure to visit the Koohsangi Park. This park is remarkable both during the day and at night due to its elevated location.

Mashhad Attractions:
Besides Koohsangi, Mashhad offers various religious and recreational sites that you shouldn’t miss. For instance, Torkabeh and Shandiz, located near Mashhad, are must-see places. Torkabeh is a scenic highland with beautiful weather, and Shandiz is renowned for its high-quality and aesthetically pleasing restaurants.

Neyshabur: City of Poets and Turquoise

Your Iranian journey won’t be complete unless you visit Neyshabur, the city of poets and turquoise. The distance between Mashhad and Neyshabur is 139 kilometers, approximately a one-hour and forty-minute drive. If you get tired along the way, you can take a break in the picturesque town of Kharrud, resembling a paradise between desert roads, for those who have been on the road for hours.

Neyshabur Highlights:
But Neyshabur itself, with the tombs of Attar and Khayyam, is one of the most important attractions. Additionally, the mausoleums of Kamal al-Molk and Parviz Meshkatiyan, a renowned musician, are worth seeing. Afterward, if you’re interested in stargazing, the Khayyam Sky Observatory is the best place for you. In this observatory, you can observe a 180-degree view of the sky and stars.

South Khorasan Province: Heading South

Gradually, we’re getting closer to the southern part of the country, where the climate becomes warmer and more desert-like. The distances between cities and provinces are also longer in the southern half. Therefore, in your Iran tour routine, you need to make some changes. For instance, carry enough water and food, use high SPF sunscreen, and ensure your vehicle’s cooling system is in good condition. South Khorasan is famous for its saffron fields, so you’ll have the opportunity to see the stages of saffron cultivation and harvest up close.

Birjand: A Summer Delight

If you arrive in Birjand during the summer, a delightful journey awaits you. Birjand is covered with orchards of barberry, apricot, grape, and almond throughout. All these delicious fruits are fresh and available for purchase in the city’s gardens, picked right from the trees. If you want a cool place under the shade of trees and by the water, you can go to the Givok Waterfall. This waterfall is 5 kilometers away from Birjand and visiting it can make a delightful picnic for you.

Sistan and Baluchestan Province

Continuing your Iran tour towards the southern part of the country, the next destination is Sistan and Baluchestan Province. You’ve probably heard of Sistan from the Shahnameh, the place where Rostam was born. You might associate this province with its desert climate and water scarcity. However, the attractions of Sistan and Baluchestan, due to its fascinating warm and arid climate, surpass those of many other regions in Iran.

Zahedan: Gateway to the Desert

From Birjand to Zahedan, you’ll drive approximately 460 kilometers through desert roads. Along the way, you might encounter herds of camels moving gracefully in the desert. Upon reaching inhabited areas, you’ll be greeted by palm trees reaching towards the sky. When you arrive in Zahedan, take a stroll in the city and make sure to buy locally handwoven Baluch clothes from the traditional markets. If you’re tired of the heat, you can venture 100 kilometers out of the city to Laddiz.

Laddiz Village: A Desert Oasis

Touring Laddiz Village is one of the most astonishing experiences in Zahedan. This well-watered village nestled among mountain-like landscapes remains an oasis in the heart of the desert. In the surrounding mountains, you can find caves with water dripping from their ceilings. The sound of dripping water and its reflection on the cave walls is truly remarkable. Additionally, due to the village’s elevation and numerous springs, the weather in Laddiz is cooler than other areas of the province.

picture 17

Chabahar: Coastal Beauty

The next destination in this amazing Iran tour is Chabahar. The attractions in Chabahar are more numerous than you can explore in a few days. Moreover, the climate in this part of the country is so beautiful and pleasant that you won’t want to leave Chabahar. As your first destination in Chabahar, visit the Lipar Lagoon.

Exploring Chabahar:
This lagoon is entirely unique in Iran and globally, with only five similar ones worldwide. The distinctiveness of Lipar Lagoon lies in the pink and red hues you observe there. Thanks to special bacteria, the colors in this lagoon create a painting more beautiful than any. Additionally, Lipar Lagoon is home to beautiful birds such as flamingos, marsh harriers, and teal ducks. Nature enthusiasts should definitely bring a camera to capture the infinite beauty of this lagoon.

Exploring Southern Cities of Iran

As you venture into the southern region of Iran, known for its date palms and fisheries, you’ll encounter a hot and arid climate. Prepare for both extreme heat during the summer months and significant humidity. It’s advisable to adapt your wardrobe to lightweight, loose, and cool clothing. Ali Baba suggests acquiring and wearing local southern attire, supporting the economy of southern cities, and ensuring your comfort.

Bandar Abbas Attractions in Hormozgan Province

Welcome to Hormozgan Province! Now is the time to replace the images of the Caspian Sea and the northern parts of the country with the forever Persian Gulf and southern landscapes in your mind. Driving along the coast, where the sea reveals itself here and there, is truly enjoyable. If you think you’ve experienced this in the north, you’re mistaken.

Bandar Abbas:
After a 678-kilometer drive, you finally reach Bandar Abbas, a city mainly known for cargo ships heading towards Iran. It’s logical to visit the port first and see the various types of ships busy in the harbor before exploring other attractions in Bandar Abbas.

Southern Iran Highlights:

Perhaps before visiting mosques, water reservoirs, and other attractions in Bandar Abbas, it’s a good idea to take a dip in a natural hot spring and wash away the travel fatigue. Genu Hot Springs, located 34 kilometers north of Bandar Abbas, not only offers hot springs but also various other recreations. After refreshing yourself, you can try horseback riding at the Genu Racecourse or enjoy camel riding if you’re not skilled in horseback riding.

Qeshm Island

Now that you’ve recharged, head back to the shores of Bandar Abbas and order a delicious southern seafood dish at one of the beachside cafes. Spend the night at one of the local eco-lodges and head to your next destination, Qeshm Island, early in the morning.

Qeshm Island, about ten times larger than Kish Island, boasts untouched and pristine nature. The island includes numerous valleys and coasts, each worth exploring. Visiting all these places requires a good pair of sports shoes, so lace up your shoes and get ready for a memorable adventure on Qeshm Island.

picture 20

Qeshm Island: A Natural Wonder

The first place to visit on Qeshm Island is the Valley of the Stars, reminiscent of the Martian landscapes in Chabahar. Stepping into this valley, you’ll feel like you’ve left Earth and set foot on an unknown planet. The peculiar shapes in this valley have formed over two million years due to the erosion of sedimentary rocks. It’s worth mentioning that this valley is registered as a UNESCO natural heritage site.

From Qeshm Island, you can take a boat to Hormuz. In Hormuz, explore the vibrant color palette of the earth. If the weather is clear and rain hasn’t fallen, the sandy earth of Hormuz is a captivating sight. Fifty people use the island’s colorful sands to create a 1,200-square-meter carpet, showcasing the diversity of colors found on the island.

Iran-Kish Attractions

Now, as island hopping is on the agenda, it’s essential to note that a complete Iran tour is incomplete without visiting Kish Island. To travel from Qeshm to Kish, take a boat to Bandar Lengeh first. Then, drive from Bandar Lengeh to Bandar Charak and finally take a boat to Kish Island. Of course, this sea route is also available. If the Sunisari ship is active, you can directly travel from Qeshm to Kish with this ship.

Water Activities in Kish

From shopping to jet skiing, cycling along the coast, and watching the sunset beyond the Greek ship on a day trip, the leisure activities in Kish are diverse. However, if you want to see only one attraction on the island, choose the Dolphinarium Park. This aquarium, a saltwater home for dolphins and several other marine mammals, stands out for the sweet behaviors and daily performances of these intelligent creatures.

Exploring Bushehr Province

After returning from Charak Island, drive along the coast for six more hours. Pass through cities like Parsian, Asaluyeh, and Bandar Kangan, and reach Bandar Bushehr. Bushehr Province is one of the most marine-rich regions in Iran and even globally. This claim can be justified for two reasons: first, Bushehr’s altitude is significantly lower than sea level, making it appear as if half the city is submerged when viewed from a ship’s deck. Second, the province has about 900 kilometers of coastline, allowing access to the beach from almost anywhere in the province.

Bushehr: A City of Palms and Rich Experiences

One of the main attractions in Bushehr is its expansive palm groves, covering approximately 39,000 hectares. Make sure to visit one of these groves, where you can enjoy the view of date palm trees and flowing water streams at their feet. The people of Bushehr are renowned for their hospitality, and it’s highly likely you won’t leave these palm groves empty-handed. Truly, Bushehr’s dates are considered the best in the country, making them the perfect choice if you enjoy buying local souvenirs.

Other things to experience in Bushehr include listening to its unique music and savoring the delicious local cuisine. However, the attractions in Bushehr go beyond these aspects and are quite diverse.

Bushehr to Ganaveh:

Bandar Ganaveh is approximately 160 kilometers away from Bushehr and is our next destination in this Iranian journey. This ancient port has numerous attractions, including its sandy beach and the port of Rig-e Asal. One of the places where you can spend enjoyable hours is Helleh Lagoon. This lagoon hosts thousands of migratory birds annually, flying from cold regions to this destination. If you’re in Bandar Ganaveh at the right time, you might have the chance to see these beautiful birds.

Leaving the southern coasts behind, head north and towards the central parts of the country. Welcome to Fars Province. The southern regions of Fars aren’t too far from Bandar Ganaveh. Our next destination is the beautiful city of Shiraz, which is approximately 323 kilometers away. On the way, you’ll pass through cities like Borazjan and Kazeroon, eventually reaching Shiraz.

picture 25

Shiraz: A City of Rich Culture and History

In Shiraz, the weather is drier and cooler compared to the southern parts of the country. The city is a paradise for tourists, offering a blend of historical, cultural, and natural attractions. While there’s much to do and see in Shiraz, the city’s most iconic attractions are its beautiful gardens and mansions.

Shiraz Attractions:

Shiraz has eight main gardens, each with its own mansions and museums. Exploring each of these gardens introduces you to a part of Shiraz’s rich history and culture. Moreover, the exquisite design of these gardens provides a serene atmosphere that will relieve all fatigue. Don’t miss out on the beauty of Shiraz’s gardens and mansions.

Yasuj and Beyond

Now, it’s time to bid farewell to the southern seas and head north and westward. From Shiraz, drive towards the northwest. Gradually, you’ll find your way back to the starting point of our journey. But before that, explore a few more provinces. Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad Province is located within the Zagros mountain range, and the highest peak in Iran, Mount Dena, is situated in this province. As we move south, the air becomes warmer, and heading north introduces cooler, mountainous terrain.

While Yasuj may not boast an abundance of attractions, if you have to choose one, it undoubtedly has to be the Tamaradi Strait. This strait holds both historical and natural significance, as it has been the site of numerous battles throughout history, leaving visible traces. Moreover, there are beautiful springs and waterfalls scattered throughout the strait, making it an ideal spot for a memorable picnic.

picture 31

Exploring Western Iran:

Having covered three main directions in Iran, only the west remains. However, western Iran is so rich in sights, both historical and natural, that describing them would require several books. Nevertheless, in the continuation of this article, we’ll get acquainted, in general, with cities along our path from the west to the north.

Ilam Province

The journey from Yasuj to Ilam is quite lengthy, covering approximately 818 kilometers, which takes around eleven and a half hours. However, don’t worry, as this route passes through some of the most beautiful and fertile plains of Iran, and the scenic beauty along the way won’t allow you to feel tired or bored. On this route, you’ll pass through cities like Behbahan, Ramhormoz, Shush, and Dezful. Parts of Khuzestan’s plain, with its unique beauty, will accompany your journey. You’ll drive on a road where, for kilometers, nothing is visible except green farms and fruitful trees.

Ilam: The Bride of Zagros

Ilam is renowned as the “Bride of Zagros.” The city has a moderate and mountainous climate, and its natural landscapes are truly breathtaking. If you spend a day in Ilam and want to see one of its attractions, make sure to visit the Arg-e Tamaradi Strait in Ordibehesht. This strait is located three kilometers from the city of Ilam and is undeniably one of the most beautiful places in the country.

It’s worth noting that there’s also an Oleander Valley in Mashhad, near Torqabeh and Shandiz.

Iran Travel in Kermanshah Province

Kermanshah is Ilam’s nearest neighbor, and reaching it takes only about two hours. The province has a warm and dry climate in its western parts, while its eastern parts are cold and mountainous. What makes Kermanshah even more remarkable is its rich history, boasting 3,000 historical sites, with 716 of them registered as national treasures.

Paveh

Paveh is one of the western cities of the province, situated 112 kilometers from Kermanshah. The road leading to it is surrounded by wheat and barley fields and mountains stretching towards the sky. Nestled in the foothills of one of these mountains is the largest water cave in Asia and the longest cave in Iran.

The pristine nature in Iran Ghar is the Gouri Ghaleh Castle, one of the most beautiful natural landscapes in the entire province. Much of this cave is open for public visits. Therefore, put on warm clothing (even if it’s summer), purchase the entrance ticket, and explore the cave. Witnessing this cave, with its intricate sounds of water and the rocks formed by these waters, showcasing themselves with excellent lighting, is part of your unforgettable Iran travel experience. Additionally, outside the cave, there’s a local market where you can buy various local handicrafts as souvenirs.

picture 30

Kermanshah City

The center of Kermanshah province, with its mosques and historic neighborhoods, awaits you. But as the first place you see, head to Taghbostan. To reach Taghbostan, start by passing through one of Iran’s most beautiful boulevards, Taghbostan Boulevard. Then, you can visit the Taghbostan bas-reliefs dating back to the Sassanid era. After exploring this site, treat yourself to one of the restaurants in Taghbostan and try the famous Kermanshah Dandeh Kebab.

Lorestan Province

Located in the foothills of the Zagros Mountains, Lorestan Province is one of the most fertile regions in the country, boasting numerous lakes, springs, and waterfalls. The landscapes are adorned with lush green plains and flowing rivers, making it an ideal destination for travel.

Khorramabad

From Kermanshah to Khorramabad, a pleasant journey of approximately two and a half hours unfolds amidst beautiful mountains and plains. Upon arrival, head straight to the city’s most iconic symbol, the Falak-ol-Aflak Castle. Built on one of the city’s largest hills, this castle served as the residence for Luristan’s kings and governors until the Qajar period. Now transformed into a museum, it houses artifacts dating back to the Achaemenid era. While Lorestan might not have all the attractions, Khorramabad is a captivating city and a stopover on your way to Hamadan.

Hamadan Province

Hamadan Province, known as the western gateway to central Iran, has a very cold climate, and its cold winds are famous. It is essential to have suitable clothing when traveling through this province.

Hamadan City

The journey from Khorramabad to Hamadan takes about three and a half hours, passing through the city of Malayer along the way, which is also worth a visit. However, the attractions of Hamadan are so numerous that culturally, historically, and naturally, they will satisfy you. When visiting Hamadan, start with the mausoleums of Baba Tahir and Avicenna. Hamadan’s advantage is that most of its attractions are located in the heart of the city, making it possible to see most of them in a one-day tour.

One of the must-see places in Hamadan is Laljin, known as the center of pottery, officially registered by UNESCO. Laljin’s pottery shops are renowned throughout the country. Still, to truly appreciate the grandeur and beauty of this city, you must visit each of these shops and workshops one by one.

Kurdistan Province

Without exaggeration, Kurdistan Province is one of the most beautiful provinces in the country, and its people are among the most patient and kind-hearted in Iran. This province, bordering Iraq, often goes unnoticed by tourists and officials due to its geographical location, but in reality, it is Iran’s lost paradise – Uraman.

Mariwan

One of the cities in Kurdistan that you must visit is Mariwan. This city can be appealing to you for two reasons: the incredible natural attractions of Mariwan and its border market. Mariwan is officially registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its traditional pottery, and its local pottery shops are well-known throughout the country. The reality is that until you visit these shops and workshops one by one, you won’t grasp the greatness and beauty of this city.

picture 27

Mariwan is picturesque and green. Still, if you want, you can go directly from Hamadan to Uraman before entering Mariwan. Or, you can travel 62 kilometers southeast from Mariwan. In any case, the Hazarmasouleh region with its stepped villages, roaring rivers, and the Palangan recreational area are all must-see attractions that you should not miss on your travel journey.

West Azerbaijan Province

As we approach the end of our exciting journey, head north towards West Azerbaijan Province. This province has the coldest climate in the country, with its springs being the clearest and its rivers the most tumultuous.

Urmia

En route from Mariwan to Urmia, you’ll encounter the cities of Saqqez and Bukan, both offering delightful stopovers. Especially Saqqez, where you can find various colorful fabrics and intricately woven Kurdish garments as souvenirs.

But finally, in our Iran tour, we arrive at the “Paris of Iran,” the city of waters – Urmia. The first place you must visit in Urmia is Lake Urmia. As the largest saltwater lake in Iran, its condition has improved recently, and its waters have taken on a bit of color. You can row on the lake, and during the migration season, you can sit and watch migrating birds. Urmia’s historical sites are also beautiful, and, with some patience, you can visit each one.

East Azerbaijan Province

After Urmia, bid farewell to West Azerbaijan and move on to its eastern neighbor. If you were to list all the attractions of East Azerbaijan, the list would be very long. From cultural and historical centers to protected natural areas and even ski resorts.

Tabriz

The attractions of Tabriz are primarily cultural and historical. From the tombs of great poets like Shahriar to constitutional houses and other historical homes in the city. However, the place that gives you the most insight into the city and its culture is the Tabriz Bazaar. As the largest covered bazaar in Iran, you can find anything you want in this bazaar. However, Tabriz leather and carpets hold a special place in this market, and seeing the alleys of the Tabriz Bazaar has a unique charm.

Ardabil

Ardabil is the coldest province in the country, but its hot springs can warm you up in any weather. Besides, the natural scenery and rich history of this city have the ability to keep you entertained. When wandering in Ardabil, you have numerous choices – you can choose the excitement of skiing or the serenity of soaking in the hot springs of Sarein.

Read more about the attractions of Ardabil

picture 34

Ardabil marks the end of your journey in Iran, where you then return to Astara, where you began your adventure. One must-see place in Ardabil is the Fandoqlu Forest. Covered with hazelnut and wild apple trees and chamomile flowers, this forest is home to enclosed deer in a protected area.
