Motel Ghoo, officially renamed Salman Shahr a few years ago, is one of the most breathtaking attractions in Mazandaran. This city has undergone several name changes throughout its history, but most people still know it as “Motel Ghoo.” Why? You’ll need a little patience to find out as you read on. The tourist attractions of Motel Ghoo have made this city experience up to a 20-fold population increase during holidays!

Where is Motel Ghoo?

Motel Ghoo is a scenic city in Mazandaran, located in Abbasabad County. This coastal city shines like a beautiful white swan amidst the blue sea. Covering an area of about 750 hectares, it is home to around 14,000 residents. To the north, it is bordered by the Caspian Sea, to the east by Kelarabad, to the west by Abbasabad, and to the south by the Alborz Mountains. It’s a place embraced by beauty and greenery from all sides.

Natural Attractions of Motel Ghoo

The attractions of Motel Ghoo include villages, forests, and beaches—a heavenly combination any traveler dreams of. Staying in a village, picnicking in the forest, and strolling along the beach have deepened my love for Mazandaran. Let me introduce you to some of the most stunning and awe-inspiring sights in Motel Ghoo.

Asbchin Village: Green and Untouched

Asbchin Village, located between Motel Ghoo and Abbasabad, is surrounded by the Caspian Sea to the north and forested mountains to the south. The word “surrounded” might make you think of conflict, but imagine if every siege were like that of Asbchin—lush, desirable, vibrant, and unique!

This picturesque village is believed to have a history spanning over a thousand years. About 650 local families live here, along with some part-time residents who only visit during holidays. Many visitors exploring Motel Ghoo’s attractions find part of their adventure in Asbchin.

The name “Asbchin” might sound strange to you, so here’s the story: Originally called “Asbeh Chineh,” the name evolved into “Asbchin” over time. In the Tabari language, “Asbeh” means “white,” and “Chineh” means “wall.” Thus, the name translates to “White Wall.” Why? The rocky walls of the Alborz Mountains appear like a white wall from the village, inspiring its original name.

Tila Kenar Forest: A Must-See in Motel Ghoo

The very mention of a forest makes me imagine myself lying on a yellow hammock tied between two tall pine trees, with autumn leaves gently falling on my face. Tila Kenar Forest is one of those places in Motel Ghoo that you simply have to visit. The sound of birds echoing among the trees and rocks, blending with the melody of a waterfall, is the perfect soundtrack to wake up to.

Located near Tila Kenar Village, this forest is one of the top attractions in Motel Ghoo. In the local dialect, “Tila” means “hook” or a long stick used for picking fruits like pomegranates or walnuts. It also means “happy and modern.”

One of Tila Kenar Forest’s charms is its proximity to the Caspian Sea. Once you’ve taken in enough forest views (though I doubt you’ll get enough), head to the beach for a refreshing sea breeze. On misty days, return to the forest, light a fire, and brew some Lahijan tea. The aroma of tea blending with the scent of wood smoke in the crisp air is pure bliss.

The Beaches of Motel Ghoo

The beach is undoubtedly one of Motel Ghoo’s most popular attractions. Many visitors fall in love with its clean, dreamy shores, where gentle waves softly kiss the sand.

The beach offers a relaxing spot for leisure, and with lifeguards present, you might even enjoy a swim. Fine sand covered with small, colorful seashells—white, gray, and pink—feels like stepping into a dream. Seabirds often join visitors, adding to the charm of this tranquil retreat.

The proximity of Motel Ghoo’s beach to various accommodations makes it convenient for visitors. Stay until nightfall to witness how the stars light up the distant, rippling waves of the sea.

Daniel Cave: An Enchanting Underground River

Daniel Cave, located in Daniel Village, is another highlight of Motel Ghoo. Nestled in the Alborz Mountains, this water cave is the second-largest underground river cave in Iran, stretching about 2 kilometers. A river flows throughout its length, and the cave’s stunning walls have taken millions of years to form.

The cave’s main corridor is 1,500 meters long and 1.5 meters wide, with many twists and narrow passages. One fascinating feature of Daniel Cave is its consistent temperature year-round, regardless of the season.

About 300 meters into the cave, you’ll reach a spacious area called the “Bat Hall.” In the middle of this hall are slippery mounds covered in mud and bat droppings, so tread carefully. The ceiling hosts numerous bats peacefully resting in the dark—please don’t disturb them. Unfortunately, the bat population has declined in recent years due to tourists throwing stones to startle them. Let’s respect their habitat and keep this natural wonder thriving.

Motel Ghoo is a mesmerizing destination that perfectly combines mountains, forests, beaches, and historical marvels, making it an unmissable spot for nature lovers and adventurers alike.

Historical Attractions of Motel Ghoo

In addition to the scenic spots of Motel Ghoo, you can explore its historical attractions as well. Historical sites are timeless treasures, as long as someone knows their stories. Remember, historical attractions are our roots, and we must take care of them. Be mindful of where you step to avoid hearing locals complain that tourists from a certain city came and damaged the place.

Markouh Castle

In ancient times, castles primarily served military purposes. They were built in strategic locations to protect cities and their fortifications. Markouh Castle, a must-visit site in Motel Ghoo, is perched atop a lush green hill known as Markouh. Reaching the castle, you’ll marvel at the blend of past and present, as there’s a telecommunications tower installed right beside the ancient structure!

Archaeological excavations have uncovered not only historical artifacts but also tools like horse harnesses and spears, confirming the castle’s military nature. Markouh Castle, situated 500 meters above sea level on Markouh Hill, offers a panoramic view of the entire area.

From this vantage point, you can see the vast city below, providing a 360-degree perspective. Looking into the distance, you’ll spot the endless blue of the Caspian Sea. Further out, the sea meets the blue sky and white clouds, stretching into eternity.

The naming of Markouh Castle has several theories. Some believe it is named after the abundance of snakes (or “mar” in Persian) in the area. Another explanation is that the hill’s shape resembles a snake. Others say the region was home to the “Mard” tribe, and the name “Mard Kouh” (Mard Hill) eventually evolved into Markouh.

Another theory suggests the name “Markouh” came from the site’s history as a hiding spot for treasures and stolen goods by bandits, once called “Mal Kouh” (Hill of Wealth), which later became Markouh. Lastly, some believe the name is tied to Mithraism, an ancient Persian religion, associating “mar” with “mother” or “Mitra,” hence naming the hill “Mother Hill” or “Sun Goddess Hill.”

Recreational Attractions of Motel Ghoo

The primary reason many tourists choose Motel Ghoo as their vacation destination is its recreational activities. Beyond the tourist attractions, Motel Ghoo boasts a variety of leisure options. Here are some of the most popular ones:

Parasailing in Motel Ghoo

With parasailing near the scenic spots of Motel Ghoo, you can witness the roaring waves of the Caspian Sea beneath your feet. This thrilling activity has grown increasingly popular each year. Shuttle and Banana Boating

Shuttle and banana boating are part of water tubing activities. Both involve being towed by a speedboat. In banana boating, the inflatable resembles a banana, giving it its name. The shuttle is another large inflatable tube that accommodates multiple people. Because it’s lightweight, it bounces over the waves as the speedboat accelerates, making it an exciting experience for tourists.

Underwater Scooter

The underwater scooter is a unique aquatic adventure near the scenic spots of Motel Ghoo. In this activity, you sit on a scooter-like device equipped with an oxygen tank and wear a transparent bubble helmet. While riding the underwater scooter, you can observe the fish and marine life of the Caspian Sea up close.

I find this experience so fascinating that I seek it out every time I travel to the north or south of the country. I don’t know about you, but I’m captivated by the mysterious underwater world of oceans and seas. Imagining the many undiscovered wonders in the deep blue leaves me dizzy with excitement.

Cable skiing, also known as water skiing, is one of the most thrilling water sports near the scenic spots of Motel Ghoo. In this activity, you stand on a board and are pulled across the water by a cable attached to a motorboat. During the ride, you can perform tricks and enjoy the high-speed movement over the waves of the Caspian Sea.

Flyboarding in Motel Ghoo

When this sport first arrived in Iran, I instantly fell in love with it! Imagine soaring above the sea near the scenic spots of Motel Ghoo, flying through the air with a device. Flyboarding involves a gadget connected to a jet ski, which pumps water with high pressure to keep you suspended in the air. You can perform tricks and even dive into the water.
