Introducing Shiraz University
Shiraz University is one of the public universities in Iran, and like other state universities, it has a rich history. The history of Shiraz University includes its founding time, responsibilities, activities, and objectives. If you want to learn more about Shiraz University, read this section carefully, as it provides an overview of the university, its history, and the university’s website address.
History of Shiraz University
Shiraz University is one of the universities under the Ministry of Science, Research, and Technology and is among the oldest universities in Iran, founded in 1946 (1325 in the Iranian calendar). Prior to the 1979 revolution, it was known as “Pahlavi University.” According to the annual rankings conducted by the Ministry of Science, Research, and Technology, Shiraz University holds the third position among comprehensive universities in Iran, following Tehran University and Tarbiat Modares University. It is also recognized as one of the top 5 universities in engineering fields.
The campus of Shiraz University, designed by Minoru Yamasaki, is the second-largest in Iran in terms of size. In the 2017 Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings, Shiraz University was acknowledged as the top comprehensive university in Iran.
Shiraz University has maintained a reputation for academic rigor, with the GPAs of its students generally being lower in various fields compared to their counterparts in other universities.
The university started its activities in 1946, and its main architect is Minoru Yamasaki, known for other famous projects such as the World Trade Center in New York. Following an invitation from Mohammad Reza Pahlavi to the president of the University of Pennsylvania, the direct management and supervision of Shiraz University fell under American leadership. This collaboration strengthened scientific and cultural relations between the two universities and continued until the end of the Shah’s regime. In 1962, Issa Sadiq, responsible for implementing the Ivy League model, joined Shiraz University. Many courses were developed, and the design and development of university campuses, faculty training, and the establishment of research institutions all fell under the influence of Ivy League principles. Later, during the tenure of Houshang Nahavandi, the well-known institution of the University of Kentucky also contributed to the formation and development of Pahlavi University.
Shiraz University holds the distinction of being the first Iranian university to have international accreditation. It is also the first university in Iran where a Nobel laureate delivered a speech. Even during the Pahlavi era, Shiraz University was referred to as the sister university of Princeton University in the United States.
Additionally, Shiraz University was the first university in Iran to have a board of trustees. The members included the Minister of the Court, Minister of Culture, University President, Fars Province Governor, CEO of the Planning Organization, CEO of the National Iranian Oil Company, and several other cultural and economic figures. This board was responsible for the overall supervision and management of the university.
Arm Campus of Shiraz University
The Arm Campus, also known as Arm Dormitory, is the central hub of Shiraz University, housing administrative buildings, classrooms, and student dormitories. The dormitories, designed by Minoru Yamasaki on the Arm Hill, remained partially incomplete due to the 1979 revolution. Plans are underway to consolidate all scattered buildings of Shiraz University into a unified campus. The Arm Campus includes various faculties and facilities, such as the Faculty of Law and Political Science, Faculty of Education Sciences, Faculty of Economics and Management, Faculty of Literature and Humanities, the College of Sciences (Physics and Chemistry sections), and libraries like the Science and Technology Library and Mirzaei Shirazi Library, along with the Hekmat Hall.
Shiraz University holds a significant place in Iranian higher education, blending a rich history with academic excellence.
