Khorramabad is located 490 kilometers from Tehran and is strategically important due to its position on the Tehran-South route.
Khorramabad
Iran’s Freeway Number 5 passes through this city. In the current location of Khorramabad, there was a city called Khaydaloo from the Elamite period, and the city of Shapurkhast was built by the order of Shapur II on its ruins, approximately in the current location of the city. The historical remains indicate that Khorramabad was one of the important cities in western Iran during the Sassanid period, and Falak-ol-Aflak or Shapurkhast Castle is a symbol of the city.
Khorramabad Airport
Khorramabad Airport is considered one of the oldest airports in Iran, which began its activities as a military airport since the time of the Allied Powers’ war and continues to this day as a civilian airport. According to statistics, in 2016, 604 aircraft landings and takeoffs were performed at this airport, and 43,361 kilograms of cargo and 209,594 passengers were transported through it.
History of Khorramabad Airport
During World War II (in the mid-1940s), the runway of Khorramabad Airport, with a width of 30 meters and a length of 1800 meters, was designed by the Allies in a location facing the military camp of Badrabad, which was the headquarters of former Soviet, British, and American military forces. This dirt runway was used after the end of World War II and the departure of the Allies from the country to transport military officers between Khorramabad and Tehran until the National Iranian Oil Company and the Telecommunications Company of Lorestan Province purchased and reconstructed the airport grounds. Approximately 1800 meters of the runway were paved with asphalt for the use of small postal planes, and a small guard room and a small building for passenger rest were constructed.
Afterward, the surrounding lands of the airport were purchased, and the village of Miyangalal, which was in the path of the airport runway, was relocated. Eventually, in 1976, during Mr. Farahbakhshian’s governorship, with the presence of officials from the National Iranian Oil Company and the Civil Aviation Organization, the responsibility for Khorramabad Airport was transferred from the Ministry of Oil to the Civil Aviation Organization.
Subsequently, about 10 employees were hired, and two fire trucks were purchased, and it was decided that in case of need, the military or municipal fire trucks would also be used. Then the existing runway was asphalted again, and 500 meters were added to its length. In June 1976, an NDB (Non-Directional Beacon) and a recorder were installed. The first passenger flight, carrying 60 passengers, was inaugurated with the presence of officials from the Civil Aviation Organization. Passenger inspections were carried out daily by 10 police officers and one central police officer from Khorramabad.
After the glorious victory of the Islamic Revolution in 1978, Khorramabad Airport witnessed remarkable growth and development. A new administrative building was constructed in 1982, and after 25 years, a newer building was built in 2007 and replaced the previous administration.
The new passenger terminal building became operational in 1983. However, due to the growth and development of the airport, a new terminal with an area of 4300 square meters was inaugurated in 2001 with minimal distance to the aircraft parking.
The new operations building was also constructed in a suitable location relative to the flight surfaces in 1996. In recent years, the development process of Khorramabad Airport has accelerated. For example, the installation and operation of the VOR/DME navigation system in 1990, the launch of the ILS system in 2006, the operation of new buildings for the Revolutionary Guards and the police in 2004, and finally, the construction of a new NDB site are among the measures taken to develop Khorramabad Airport sustainably. Nonetheless, Khorramabad Airport remains one of the most beautiful airports in the country.
