Vakil Bazaar in Shiraz stands as one of Iran’s most renowned traditional and historical markets. Built by the decree of Karim Khan Zand, it now resides in the city center and is counted among Shiraz’s prominent attractions. Historic Vakil Mosque and Bath are also located adjacent to this bazaar. Rarely does anyone experience a trip to Shiraz without exploring the wonders of Vakil Bazaar.
In the past, all commercial activities, the buying and selling of domestic and foreign goods, and transactions took place within the chambers of this bazaar. In essence, Vakil Bazaar was the true heart of Shiraz during that era, where all business affairs flourished. Vakil Bazaar is registered as National Heritage No. 924 among the country’s historical treasures.
Location of Vakil Bazaar in Shiraz:
Vakil Bazaar is one of the most captivating tourist spots in the province of Fars, situated in Shiraz. The market has different entrances, allowing access from various points. These entrances are located on Zand, Taleghani, and Lotfali Khan Zand streets. The main entrance to Vakil Bazaar, both north and south, is on Zand Street, on the eastern side of the City Hall Square.
Due to its central location and proximity to heavily-trafficked routes, reaching Vakil Bazaar is highly convenient. The nearest Shiraz metro station is Zandiye Station, a less than 15-minute walk to the bazaar. Buses from various points in the city move towards Shiraz City Hall Square, providing another means of reaching the bazaar. Consider the city’s traffic if using a private vehicle.
History of Vakil Bazaar in Shiraz:
It seems that when Karim Khan Zand went to the city of Lar for governance, upon seeing the Qeisariyeh Bazaar there, he decided to construct a similar bazaar in Shiraz to serve as a hub for the business and economic affairs of the people. Historical writings suggest that the construction of Vakil Bazaar in Shiraz began under the orders of Karim Khan Zand in 1172 AH and concluded after 21 years in 1193 AH. With the completion of construction, the chambers of Vakil Bazaar transformed into a place for all commercial activities, the buying and selling of foreign and domestic goods, issuance and receipt of transactions, making it the economic center of the then capital of Iran.
Fars Province’s Farrokhi Shirazi writes about this bazaar’s artifacts:
“Vakil Bazaar is one of the markets of the late Karim Khan Vakil. Its foundations are made of large stones, forming a four-sided structure with a very high ceiling and pleasing architecture. Few markets in Iran are seen with such a design and foundation. It stretches to a forty-one-arched quadrangle, known as Bazaaran Gooyan, hosting various trades, including coppersmiths, crystal sellers, tailors, and more. Another market with forty-six arches, named Kalaadoozan Bazaar, is known for hat makers and other professions, including many money changers.”

Structure of Vakil Bazaar in Shiraz:
Like all traditional markets, different sections of Vakil Bazaar were historically known by specific names based on the trades concentrated in each section, such as the Bazaaran Bazaar, the Copper Market, the Hat Market, and similar names. Currently, despite economic activities and transactions in Vakil Bazaar, the original spirit of the market has been preserved. However, various sections of the market are now labeled with names such as South Vakil Bazaar and Ruhollah Bazaar on guideboards.
Architecture of Vakil Bazaar in Shiraz:
The construction of the market involves materials such as plaster, brick, and lime, while the columns are crafted from cut stone, making the structure one of the most robust of its time. The four-sided ceiling of the market previously had a height of approximately 11 meters, but due to the rising floor level, it has reduced to 10 meters. The market’s ceiling branches out into four sections. Earlier, beneath the ceiling, there was a large marble basin, and its water supply was maintained through a water channel. Currently, the marble basin is gone due to the elevated market floor, but the water channel still exists.
On the southern side, parallel to the Turquoise Market, another market is located next to the entrance of Vakil Mosque, known as the Sword Makers’ Bazaar. This market consists of 11 pairs of shops.
The ventilation system, due to the height of the market’s dome and windcatchers, was efficient and facilitated through simple windcatchers. Additionally, vents and openings called Jamkhaneh or Hornour were placed under the ceiling to allow sufficient air and light into the market. Although these openings are now closed after maintenance, above the shops, there are grilles for ventilation and lighting.

Vakil Bazaar in Shiraz currently serves as a marketplace for various Iranian and imported goods. Prominent items available for purchase include various handwoven and machine-made Iranian carpets, fabrics, and traditional jewelry. Most of the main sections of the market today are occupied by carpet and fabric merchants. The Meshir Bazaar is another section of the market worth visiting. In addition to its beautiful architecture, this section offers various high-quality Iranian handicrafts and traditional jewelry.
Visiting Hours of Vakil Bazaar in Shiraz:
Generally, market shops begin their operations at 9 AM and remain open until around 10 PM during the first half of the year and until about 7 PM during the second half of the year. The complex is closed on certain occasions, including the days of Arbaeen, Tasua and Ashura, the martyrdom of Imam Ali (AS), the departure of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), the passing of Imam Khomeini (RA), and the martyrdom of Imam Jafar Sadiq (AS). Additionally, some shops may be closed on Fridays.
